How to wash your oodie and onesie?

So it’s week 8 in lockdown as we write this and we have been living, sleeping and bingeing on various things in our oodies and onesies. Every now and then we would take it off to hit the showers. Even less frequently we would reluctantly strip down and nudie run into our laundry to wash them but hmm, what were the settings again? 🤔

Onesies have become a norm during this lockdown era. Onesies are definitely thicker, heavier and snugglier than other garments but you can breathe a sigh of relief that almost all onesies are machine washable. Your oodies and onesies should come with a care label containing detailed instructions and special precautions and it’s worthwhile paying attention to these if you’d like your onesie to make it through the next few winters.

Here are some general tips when washing your oodie or onesie to maintain their colour vibrancy and all round fluffiness:

  1. Use COLD water for washing your onesies to avoid stretching and shrinking. Always use the gentle wash setting on your machine as too much agitation can put too much stress on the fabric. Go the extra mile to turn your onesie inside out before putting it inside the machine. It will preserve the quality of the fabric and prevent visible wear on the outside surface. In addition to this, sort your laundry and avoid washing light and dark-colored clothes at the same time.

  2. No need to pump iron like Arnie, a few small pumps or half a bottle cap of a mild detergent should be used (detergents approved for wool/silk are ideal). The fabric tends to absorb excess detergents that make your onesie look less vibrant. The use of fabric softener is highly recommended but again just a small dose. Absolutely avoid chlorine bleach and other bleaching products which can be harmful to the fabric. If necessary, use those brands with color safe bleach and 0% chlorine.

  3. Ideally, line dry your onesie but be sure to lay it out across a few lines to reduce excessive pulling on the fabric. Hang your onesie at room temperature and avoid direct exposure to sunlight. Drying your onesie through hanging might take more than a day, but this will ensure its durability. If you’d like to get back into your onesie sooner you can throw it in the dryer opting to low to medium heat and the most gentle option. Speed up the drying process with a few wool balls thrown into the dryer.

  4. Your onesie is now ready for the next bingeable Netflix series. Also, refrain from dry cleaning and ironing!
